Verification of the Awa Photoinjector Beam Parameters Required for a Transverse-to-longitudinal Emittance Exchange Experiment

چکیده
A transverse-to-longitudinal emittance exchange experiment is in preparation at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA). The experiment aims at exchanging a low (εz < 5 μm) longitudinal emittance with a large (εx > 15 μm) transverse horizontal emittance for a bunch charge of ∼ 100 pC. Achieving such initial emittance partitioning, though demonstrated via numerical simulations, is a challenging task and needs to be experimentally verified. In this paper, we report preliminary emittance measurements of the beam in the transverse and longitudinal planes performed at ∼ 12 MeV. The measurements are compared with numerical simulations.

First observation of the exchange of transverse and longitudinal emittances.
An experimental program to demonstrate a novel phase-space manipulation in which the horizontal and longitudinal emittances of a particle beam are exchanged has been completed at the Fermilab A0 Photoinjector. A new beam line, consisting of a TM(110) deflecting mode cavity flanked by two horizontally dispersive doglegs has been installed. We report on the first direct observation of transverse ...

Transverse to longitudinal phase space manipulation hold great promises, e.g., as a potential technique for repartitioning the emittances of a beam. A proof-of-principle experiment to demonstrate the exchange of a low longitudinal emittance with a larger transverse emittance is in preparation at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator using a ∼ 12 MeV electron beam. In this paper we explore the limit...
متن کاملThe Flat Beam Experiment at the Fnal Photoinjector
A technique for production of an electron beam with a high transverse emittance ratio, a “flat” beam, has been proposed by Brinkmann, Derbenev, and Flöttmann.[1] The cathode of an RF-laser gun is immersed in a solenoidal magnetic field; as a result the beam emitted from a round laser spot has a net angular momentum. Subsequent passage through a matched quadrupole channel that has a 90 degree di...
متن کاملEnvelope analysis of intense relativistic quasilaminar beams in rf photoinjectors: A theory of emittance compensation
In this paper we provide an analytical description for the transverse dynamics of relativistic, space-chargedominated beams undergoing strong acceleration, such as those typically produced by rf photoinjectors. These beams are chiefly characterized by a fast transition, due to strong acceleration, from the nonrelativistic to the relativistic regime in which the initially strong collective plasm...
متن کاملPhotocathode rf gun emittance measurements using variable length laser pulses
The Gun Test Facility (GTF) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) was created to develop an appropriate injector for the proposed Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC. The LCLS design requires the injector to produce a beam with at least 1 nC of charge in a 10 ps or shorter pulse with no greater than 1 -mrad normalized rms emittance. The first photoinjector under study at the G...
